Le légendaire concept artist Adrian Smith

Adrian Smith est célèbre pour avoir été un des pionniers de la « dark fantasy » et a fortement contribué aux univers de Warhammer. Son atmosphère sombre et sérieuse ainsi que le réalisme de ses peintures en ont fait un incontournable que je me devais de présenter.

Rares sont les artistes pouvant se vanter d’avoir inspiré des milliers d’artistes et d’avoir même fait évoluer graphiquement un genre. Parcourir le portfolio d’Adrian Smith, c’est un peu comme contempler une partie de l’histoire de la fantasy. Voilà pourquoi cet artiste de renom devait figurer sur Design Spartan. Les fans de Warhammer (et 40k) devraient particulièrement se régaler car il a énormément contribué à créer l’univers visuel de la franchise ce qui l’a rendu très populaire dès les années 90.

Adrian Smith, c’est donc un vieux de la vieille. C’est pourquoi vous remarquerez que certaines illustrations présentées ci-dessous sont encore des peintures à l’huile et non des digital paintings, les plus anciennes ont même un petit côté « old school » je trouve. De même, on peut remarquer qu’il est encore très attaché aux médias traditionnels par la forte présence de dessins faits au crayon de papier puis remaniés dans Photoshop.

Tout comme Craig Mullins, Adrian Smith possède sa page Wikipédia qui – même si elle n’est pas très fournie – a le mérite d’exister ! 😛

  1. Je suis plus très fan des concept-artistes de ce genre, cependant il faut reconnaitre que c’est un travail énorme à mettre en place pour arriver à des résultats pareils. Ce que je trouve dommage, et c’est évidement une question de gout, c’est que c’est presque toujours axé sur le gore, du moins sur ce que tu propose ici spartan. Il y a peut-être des concept artistes qui font des painting moins obscurs ? J’avoue que je n’ai pas cherché. Si jamais t’en choppe ça serai un plaisir d’en voir ici 🙂 Quand je vois les noir et blanc de Adrian Smith, je bave, mais uniquement pour sa gestion de la lumière et de la technique, le sujet, bof bof pour ma part.
